A Simple Matter of Trust

Recent developments in the blogosphere, what with Stevin's old blog getting deleted recently and Scottage's loss today, made me realize how lucky - but also extremely naive and careless - I've been. A few months ago. as you know, I've had my blog redesigned. But you know all the details. For me, the adventure ended well, because the person, who worked on my template turned out to be someone I could trust. But it could have ended very differently and I could have lost everything I wrote.

Lessons to be learned:

1)I should create a backup copy of everything I do, be it my professional work or a blog.

2)Make sure I know the person I work with before entrusting him/her with any passwords.

The second part is actually harder than the first. How do you really "know" that the person is trustworthy if it doesn't happen to be someone with longstanding professional reputation? You really can't, unless you keep going by recommendations of people you know. Or, if you want to add the element of risk, you can just give it a try, and judge a person by action... which may take a while and may backfire. Which is why you should take precautions. Except... you can't protect yourself from all the possible risks in the world. It's just not realistic.

The two stories above make me more than a little wary to trust strangers with things that are important to me. Of course, the chances of getting pleasantly or unpleasantly surprised are probably equal, but I'm more inclined to be cautione by other people's mistakes than to use my own successful experience to draw conclusions about human nature in general. Which is not really fair, but...

But apparently, trust isn't such a simple matter, after all. Unfortunately.
